Open Badges in practice: from skills recognition to course completion.
Two very different programmes. One flexible digital credential framework.
See how Webiwant used Open Badges to recognise web-editor skills for Lepetitjournal.com Dublin and learning achievements within the European DATAETHICS training project.
Turning contributor experience into visible digital credentials.
Lepetitjournal.com Dublin wanted to recognise the editorial and digital skills contributors developed while producing published content for the online newspaper.
Make practical editorial experience easier to demonstrate.
Contributors were developing genuine writing, editorial, SEO and digital-publishing skills through their work, but those capabilities were difficult to demonstrate once their contribution ended.
Webiwant helped create a progressive Open Badge system linked to published output and clearly defined editorial skills.

5 published articles
The first credential recognises contributors who have demonstrated the required editorial skills across at least five published articles.
10 published articles
The second level recognises continued contribution and a larger body of published editorial work.
20 published articles
The highest level recognises sustained contribution and a substantial portfolio of published content.
Evidence of real web-content editing skills.
- Editorial and writing skills
- French language quality
- Ability to work independently
- Deadline management
- Topic selection and audience understanding
- Basic SEO knowledge
- Appropriate image sourcing and use
The credential is backed by evidence.
For the Bronze badge, the contributor's five published article URLs provide direct evidence that the earning criteria have been met.
Recognising learning and teaching within a European training programme.
DATAETHICS needed a digital credential system capable of recognising two different achievements within its Summer School: completing the course as a learner and contributing as an expert speaker.
Digital credentials for an international academic programme.
DATAETHICS was a transnational Erasmus+ project involving European universities and medical institutions, with training focused on biomedical big data, artificial intelligence and related ethical questions.
Its five-day Summer School combined expert lectures, learning activities and collaboration between participants from different institutions.
Separate badges for completing the programme and contributing as a speaker.
Summer School Completed
Awarded to participants completing the programme and demonstrating the learning objectives associated with biomedical AI, data management and ethical considerations.
- Understanding ethical issues around AI and biomedical big data

- Applying knowledge to practical ethical dilemmas
- Teamwork and collaborative discussion
- Communication and presentation
- Understanding different values and perspectives
Summer School Speaker
Awarded to experts who prepared and delivered teaching content during the programme and actively engaged with its international academic audience.
- Preparation of lecture content and resources
- Delivery of a 40-minute presentation
- Demonstrated subject-matter expertise
- Communication to a transnational academic audience
- Active engagement during audience Q&A
Open Badges can be designed around the achievement that matters.
These projects use the same digital credential framework in very different contexts. The badge structure follows the achievement, audience and evidence rather than forcing every programme into the same model.
Different recipients
Contributors, employees, learners, trainers, volunteers and other participants can all be recognised through appropriately designed credentials.
Different criteria
Earning criteria can be based on output, demonstrated skills, course completion, participation or professional contribution.
Different evidence
Published work, completed learning, delivered teaching or other relevant proof can support the credential where appropriate.
Different progression models
A programme can use one credential, several achievement types or progressive levels such as Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Build the credential around what your organisation wants to recognise.
Webiwant can help define achievements, earning criteria, metadata, badge design, evidence, issuing platforms and the wider implementation process.
